Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is most often designed for women who are experiencing difficulties with hormonal balance and regulation associated with menopause and sexual dysfunction. Typical symptoms of menopause may include vaginal dryness, hot flashes, decreased libido, weight gain, irritability, sleep disturbances, and mood swings.

There are three main hormones that are responsible for the menstrual cycle, sexual desire and the general characteristics of females. These hormones are estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. In the natural state and before menopause, these hormones are produced by the ovaries and are in balance with each other. After menopause, the ovaries stop producing these hormones and the levels start to decline leading to many symptoms and discomfort.

Women have conventionally used synthetic estrogen therapy to treat menopausal symptoms and to help protect against osteoporosis (thin and weak the bones). Another option for women needing hormone replacement therapy may be the use of bio-identical hormones.

Bio-identical hormones are natural hormones that have the same chemical structures as the hormones produced by the human body. Bio-identical hormones are plant-based chemicals that patients can use for hormone replacement therapy. Bio-identical hormones replacement therapy (BHRT) allows patients and physicians to work together to develop the right combination of natural hormones to help balance the normal physiologic levels and keep patients healthy.

Uses of bio-Identical replacement therapy may include relief of hot flashes, vaginal dryness, night sweats, burning and itching, mood swings, preventing osteoporosis, improving lipid profiles, and increasing libido.

Bio-identical HRTs are available in different strengths and dosage forms, and our compounding experts can customize doses with greater accuracy to an individual patient's requirements. Express Pharmacy compounding pharmacists are meeting the needs of pre-menopausal and menopausal women through the use of plant derived hormones that are biologically identical to the naturally occurring hormones.  We provide options that may help alleviate the symptoms of hormonal imbalance and restore body chemistry to protect against long-term difficulties and discomforts.

Common Bio-Identical Hormone Compounded by Express Pharmacy

Estrogens:  Estrogen is a group of similar hormones that can have different degrees of activity on different tissues in the body. There are three main types of estrogens: Estrone (E1) Estradiol (E2), and Estriol (E3).  These hormones are the pure chemical forms obtained from the Soy plant.

Estradiol is the primary estrogen produced by the ovary and estrone is formed by conversion from estradiol. Estrone is the estrogen primarily associated with breast cancer. Estriol is produced in very large amounts during pregnancy and may be protective against breast cancer.

Progesterone:  Progesterone is produced by the ovaries after a woman ovulates or releases an egg. It is the hormone that signals the uterus to start and stop the menstrual flow. Many women notice a decrease in progesterone level prior to menopause with symptoms of hot flashes, irregular periods, mood swings, irritability, and sleep disturbance.

Testosterone:  Testosterone is a hormone primarily produced by males. However, women make testosterone in smaller amounts. Testosterone is used to treat many conditions in both men and women and can provide an increase in energy, libido, and bone density for some women.

DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone):   is a hormone secreted by the adrenal gland in the human body. DHEA serves as precursor to male and female sex hormones (androgens and estrogens). DHEA uses include slowing or reversing aging, weight management, immune response, and improving libido.
